Saskatchewan Landfills

  • When compared to other provinces, Saskatchewan has one of the largest number of operating landfill sites in the country.
  • The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment is encouraging a reduction in the number of landfills in the Province.
  • In order for an existing landfill to be expanded, closed, decommissioned, or re-purposed, and in order to establish a new landfill, an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) must be carried out.  An ESA consists of a detailed site characterization that examines the soil, groundwater, surface water, and potential contaminants on the site as well as contaminant receptors.
  • Post closure care of a decommissioned landfill site may include long term groundwater monitoring, final cover maintenance, and drainage and erosion control and maintenance.
